This, however, was not only a celebration for them but an occasion to continue their fight with more grit, towards an unfaltering goal—more birthdays for children in their facility. What resulted was a commercial that surpassed every marketing language and spoke directly to the audience’s heart. In dimly lit alleyways and hospital beds adorned with birthday decorations, the little warriors count to 150—a count that echoes the passage of time for SickKids, and mirrors a pulsating heart for the children themselves. The nuances in the narrative are delicately but so firmly written that one can only watch in awe—kids pushing up, pushing through, punching bags and piñatas, covering the flame of the candle from the rain only to become the very flame at the end. The rich tapestry of the montage layers two contrasting elements together—birthday decorations and athletic vigour—to draw a metaphor that could not have possibly been expressed any better in words. “Our 150th birthday presented a unique strategic and creative challenge for the brand. We wanted to celebrate SickKids’ incredible history but also needed a compelling motivator to get people to donate today, from the first meeting with FCB they reminded us and held us to task that this work had to lean into the VS fight, and that in order to motivate donations we had to focus on our current fight—a fight for more birthdays for our patients,” elaborated Roy Gruia, Director, Brand Marketing at SickKids Foundation.
