Freshman running back Tony Stewart and senior quarterback Chuck Hartlieb took over for injured starters to rack up 412 yards of total offense, 223 via the air and 189 on the ground. Hartlieb started in place of an injured Dan McGwire, and completed 18 of 26 passes and 2 TDs. Stewart replaced Kevin Harmon by rushing for 102 yards on 23 carries. The Hawks drove 89 yards on their first possession, capped off with a 51 yard TD pass from Hartieb to Marv Cook. The Iowa defense held the Badgers to just 175 total yards and sacked Wisconsin quarterback Tony Lowery five times. Senior Steve Thomas had three tackles for loss, and senior Kerry Burt caused a fumble and picked off two Lowery passes.
