Sagalassos is an ancient city located in southwestern Turkey, near the city of Burdur. Sagalassos was founded in the 3rd century BC, during the Hellenistic period. The city was located on a strategic hilltop that provided a natural defense against invading armies. Over time, Sagalassos grew in size and importance, becoming a major center of commerce, culture, and religion in the region. During the Roman period, Sagalassos continued to flourish, thanks in part to its strategic location on the trade routes between the Aegean and the Mediterranean. The city became famous for its marble quarries, which produced some of the finest marble in the Roman Empire. This marble was used to create many of the most famous buildings and sculptures of the time. The architecture of Sagalassos reflects the city's rich history and cultural influences. The Hellenistic period saw the construction of many important public buildings, including the agora, the theater, and the temple of Apollo. These buildings were designed in the classical Greek style, with simple but elegant lines and impressive proportions. During the Roman period, Sagalassos underwent a major building program, with many new public buildings and monuments constructed. One of the most impressive of these is the Antonine Fountain, which was built in the 2nd century AD and features intricate carvings and detailed sculptures. The Byzantine period saw the construction of many new churches and monasteries, including the impressive Church of St. John. This church features beautiful frescoes and mosaics, as well as an impressive dome. Excavations at Sagalassos began in the early 1990s and have continued to this day. These excavations have uncovered many important artifacts and structures, providing valuable insights into the city's history and culture. One of the most impressive discoveries at Sagalassos is the monumental fountain complex, which includes the Antonine Fountain as well as several other fountains and water features. This complex is one of the largest and most impressive of its kind in the Roman Empire. Other important discoveries include the Temple of Hadrian, which features a stunningly well-preserved facade, and the Nymphaeum, a beautifully decorated public fountain. The archaeological remains of Sagalassos are an important testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. The city's strategic location and impressive architecture have made it an important center of commerce, culture, and religion throughout the ages. Today, Sagalassos continues to be an important site for archaeologists and historians, providing valuable insights into the history of the region and the wider Mediterranean world. 🧍 Please subscribe if you're new to the channel! 🔔 Hit the bell next to Subscribe so you're up to date with our latest videos! ❤️ Like and Comment.
