This video describes the isotope effect which helps to determine reaction mechanism in organic chemistry. The decrease in rate of reaction by changing protium with deuterium has been discussed. The cleavage of C-H bond has been compared with cleavage of C-D bond and the reason behind this difference has been discussed. The ground state vibrational energy of these bonds has been compared. The importance of isotope effect to determine reaction mechanism has been discussed by giving examples of reactions like alpha bromination of ketones.
