Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape labor markets across the world. Most research on AI and employment, including studies from leading technology companies, focuses on labor markets in advanced economies. These studies often measure disruption through indicators such as unemployment rates and occupational exposure. But labor markets in the Global South operate differently. Across many developing economies: • informal employment dominates • workers often hold multiple jobs simultaneously • youth populations are rapidly entering the workforce • digital infrastructure varies widely In these environments, technological disruption rarely appears first as unemployment. Instead, it often shows up through wage compression, informalization of work, underemployment, and shrinking entry-level opportunities. This video introduces two new frameworks designed to monitor these changes: The Global South AI Labor Index A multi-dimensional framework tracking six indicators of AI-driven labor transformation. The AI Labor Risk Dashboard A practical policy monitoring tool that governments can use to detect early signals of workforce disruption. Together, these tools aim to help policymakers, researchers, and institutions better understand how artificial intelligence is reshaping work across developing economies. Topics covered in this video: • Why current AI labor studies miss Global South realities • The limits of unemployment as a disruption indicator • The structure of the Global South AI Labor Index • Key indicators governments should monitor • How an AI Labor Risk Dashboard can serve as an early warning system Indicators in the Global South AI Labor Index Informality Rate Earnings Compression Youth Employment Entry Sectoral Exposure to AI Underemployment Digital Infrastructure Readiness Why this matters: Over 60% of the global workforce operates in the informal economy (ILO). Without new measurement frameworks, the labor impacts of AI in developing economies may remain invisible in global policy debates. The Global South AI Labor Index is an attempt to change that.
