After many weeks of speculation about potential cyclone activity in the Bay of Bengal, a disturbance finally revealed itself near the Andaman islands, and moved into the central part of the sea. A compact system, Amphan was named by IMD and intensified rapidly, becoming a ferocious Category 5 storm as it began to approach India. Initially, JTWC and F13 estimated intensities of the storm to be at 165mph and 901mb, but both agencies have now slightly downgraded Amphan to 160mph at peak. Mercifully, the storm structure collapsed as it neared the coast of India, but still retained Category 3 status on its closest pass to Paradip, and made landfall on Sagar Island, West Bengal on May 20th. Still packing hurricane force winds, the storm passed barely 15 kilometers east of the center of Kolkata, before progressing further inland into Bangladesh.
