China’s Shenyang J-16 fighter reportedly intercepted two U.S. stealth jets near its eastern coast, sparking debate over air superiority in the Pacific. According to Defence Security Asia citing CCTV on October 10, a PLA pilot claimed the J-16 closed in to within 10–15 meters, executed an inverted maneuver, achieved radar locks on both targets, and forced them to disengage. The U.S. military has neither confirmed nor denied the incident. If accurate, it highlights a leap in China’s command-and-control and stealth-countering capabilities. The twin-seat, twin-engine J-16, based on the Russian Su-30, features AESA radar with low-frequency modes, carries PL-15 BVR and PL-10 missiles, and has an electronic warfare variant with jamming pods. It can reach speeds over Mach 2 and operate beyond 1,500 km, making it highly versatile in contested airspace. The episode coincides with the U.S. President Trump announcing 100% additional tariffs on Chinese goods and export controls on critical software, raising economic and geopolitical tensions between the two powers.
