In this video I share what I have learned about research and writing strategies over the past 30 or so years as an academic in the field of International Relations. The video is recorded primarily for my students at the University of Queensland - where I have run a session on writing in every class I have taught over the past 20 years - but I hope it is useful for others too. I provide three types of tips on good academic writing: First: general tips on the psychology of writing, on habit and practice, on reading and on figuring things out through writing. Second: thoughts on the importance of voice and rhythm, of accessible, jargon-free writing styles and of the role that opening passages play in capturing a reader’s attention. Third: text-specific suggestions on puzzle-driven research, on the role of literature reviews, arguments, structure, focusing, one-page plans and drafting/redrafting.
