What is "Person-Centred Care"? | iHASCO

Person-centred care means making individual residents equal partners in the planning of the care they receive. It means considering a resident’s emotional, social and spiritual needs, and not just the “mechanics” of caring for them. For example, imagine a young, female care assistant who plans on bathing an elderly male resident. Well, the “mechanics” of the situation are simple – draw a bath, make sure it’s the right temperature, help the resident into the bath and make sure he’s thoroughly cleaned. However, proper Person-Centred Care is much more than just these simple mechanics. How might an elderly man feel about being bathed by a care assistant no older than his daughter, or even granddaughter? Does he even want a bath today? Always having a resident’s safety, comfort and well-being in mind is the key to Person-Centred Care, and the only way to do this is to first understand what the resident wants. This is why you should always involve them in the planning of their own care and any decision which might affect them. You should give them all the information they need to make an informed choice, in a way which they easily understand. And it means being flexible, and willing to compromise. If a resident is under the age of 16, or if they are deemed not to have the mental capacity to make their own decisions, then their families should also be consulted when planning for their care.
