The Lion Gate, the Treasury of Atreus, and the huge stone walls show the skill of its builders. These walls are called Cyclopean masonry, because the stones are so large that later Greeks believed only giants could have built them. Legends also surround Mycenae. King Agamemnon, who led the Greeks in the Trojan War, ruled here. Homer’s epic poems often mention this city, making it both a historical and mythical place. Today, Mycenae is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ruins continue to teach us about early Greek society, art, and culture. Mycenae remains a window into the beginnings of European civilization.
