In 1904 the province of British Columbia purchased 405 hectares for the construction of the hospital and farm in a rural setting. Opening in 1913, Riverview became home to some of the provinces most disturbed patients. You may recognize this property as it has become a popular filming location. The Matrix franchise, Deadpool, X-Files, Smallville, Riverdale, Butterfly Effect, Final Destination are just a few that have chosen this eerie site for their productions. Over the years, Riverview grew drastically with more than 80 buildings, nearly five thousand patients and just about as many staff. Although Riverview was recognized as a model in psychiatric care, it eventually gained a bad reputation after units were overcrowded and use of questionable treatment was prevalent. While it is recognized as a Heritage site today, Riverview has a long dark history and is believed to be haunted, listed as one of Vancouvers most haunted locations.
