What is canon law? Where does it come from? And why is it so important for the life of the Church? In this episode of Angelicum Insights, Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., Rector of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), explores the origins and purpose of canon law within the Catholic tradition. From the earliest biblical texts, we already find rules guiding how believers should live in right relationship with God and one another. The early Church Councils then issued canons on matters such as priestly conduct and the celebration of the sacraments, principles that gradually took the form of binding decrees governing the internal life of the Church. During the Middle Ages, canon law developed into a comprehensive legal system addressing every aspect of ecclesial life and governance. Yet, at its heart, canon law is more than regulation: it is about fostering right relationships within the Church, grounded in both justice and charity. This series offers short reflections on today’s questions through the lens of Scripture and the Catholic intellectual tradition. 💬 Have a question you'd like us to explore?
