Steel & Control Grade 3 Marching Band Designed and Arranged by Jonathan T. Martin "Steel & Control" cleverly plays on the homophone "steel" versus "steal" to examine how the machines created to serve us may have become our masters. Through powerful arrangements of Tchaikovsky's "Marche Slave", Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and selections from Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "New World Symphony", this show offers both musical sophistication and conceptual depth. The production opens with a darker, intense mood as an optional pre-show narration sets the stage for humanity held captive during "Marche Slave". The mood shifts as "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is reimagined as a haunting ballad, before the show culminates with Dvořák's "New World Symphony", offering a hopeful vision of a world where humans and machines coexist in balance with technology as helpful servant rather than overlord. Designed specifically for small band success while providing a welcomed challenge for ensembles of all sizes, this Grade 3 show balances accessibility with musical and thematic complexity. The concept allows for both serious social commentary and ironic interpretation, giving directors flexibility in how they choose to present the material.
