The Marjory Bruce Memorial Cairn at Gallowhill, Knock near Paisley is said to be the site where in 1316 she fell whilst heavily pregnant and her son Robert II was delivered by Caesarian. Damage to his eye resulted in her name 'Queen Blearie'. The fact behind the fiction may be that she gave birth at Renfrew Castle and the original memorial was at Kemp Knowe and commemorated the battle where Somerled, Lord of the Isles was killed. The anglicised version of the Scottish Gaelic for 'memorial of battle' sounds like 'Queen Blearie' and this is thought to be the root of the legend. Marjory was originally buried in the Chapter House of Paisley Abbey and her present memorial tomb is a composite of parts of the old Rood screen and an effigy from an unknown grave taken from the cemetery.
