The monastery church of St. Mary of the Assumption can be seen from afar. It is not only the largest but also the oldest building in town. Originally built before 1195, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style after fires in 1686 and 1717. Also part of the monastery complex is the building of #Solingen's #German Blade Museum. Here, you'll learn all about the city of blades' most famous export. Gräfrath presents the image of a small Bergisch town from pre-industrial times: narrow streets lined with typical Bergisch half-timbered houses, an idyllic market square surrounded by lovingly restored buildings, and an imposing monastery church towering high above.. Well-preserved ensembles of houses from the 18th and 19th centuries characterize the image of Solingen's so-called "parlor" (parlor of the heart of the city). There are many opportunities for refreshment. A landmark visible from afar is the Monastery Church of St. Mary of the Assumption. Originally Romanesque, this pillar basilica is the oldest building in town and today is characterized by the Baroque style. The former monastery building houses the #German Blade Museum.
