Execution of German civilians who massacred US airmen with rocks, hammers, sticks & shovels

The Second World War began on 1 September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland using Blitzkrieg tactics, which combined speed, armoured units, and air strikes. This invasion prompted Britain and France to declare war on Germany, initiating the broader European conflict. Within weeks, Poland fell, and Germany turned its attention westward. On the afternoon of 24 August 1944, an American B-24 bomber nicknamed “Wham! Bam! Thank You, Ma'm.”, piloted by 2nd Lt. Norman Rogers Jr., took part in a mission targeting an airfield near Hanover. The operation was part of one of the largest aerial formations that ever departed from airbases in England, consisting of over 2,000 aircraft. As the plane approached the target, it encountered intense anti-aircraft fire and just after releasing their bombs directly on the target, the aircraft sustained several bursts of flak. A direct hit in the bomb bay severely damaged the hydraulic system, knocked out one engine, and left two others partially functional. “The Wham! Bam! Thank You, Ma'm” was critically damaged, forcing the crew to abandon the bomber. The bail-out order was issued, and all nine crew members parachuted into a farm area. Among the crew, Forrest Brininstool suffered a severe abdominal injury during the descent. After landing, he received help from an elderly farm couple who provided first aid. In gratitude, Brininstool gave them his silk parachute, a highly valuable item for the farmers. Within hours, most of the crew were captured by Luftwaffe personnel and taken for interrogation. They were then transported to a nearby air base, where they spent the night. At Rogers' insistence, Brininstool was taken to a doctor, who operated on his stomach wound before transferring him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The next morning, while Brininstool remained in the hospital, the rest of the crew were loaded onto a train bound for a prisoner-of-war camp near Frankfurt. As the train travelled through German towns, angry crowds gathered at the windows, shouting insults, shaking their fists, and spitting at the captured "terror flyers" as they called them. During the journey, the train encountered a bombed-out section of track near the town of Rüsselsheim, located about 25 kilometers west of Frankfurt, forcing the guards and airmen to get off the train. The guards then began escorting the prisoners on foot toward Rüsselsheim, expecting to catch another train beyond the damaged area. As they approached the town, it was clear that Rüsselsheim had suffered devastating damage. Just hours earlier, on the night of 25 August, the town endured a massive bombing raid by the British Royal Air Force, targeting the Opel automobile factory, which had been converted to manufacture airplane parts for the war effort. The British dropped approximately 675 metric tons of bombs and over 400,000 incendiaries on the city. Many of these struck the Opel plant, reducing it to rubble, while others caused widespread destruction throughout Rüsselsheim, including its historical city center.
