Behind the Scenes Video - Marine Sheet Piling for Quay Extension | Humberside Project Join us as Sheet Piling (UK) LTD Ltd delivers another highly technical marine piling project, this time at New Holland Dock in Humberside. As the UK’s leading sheet pile specialist, we were tasked with upgrading and extending a quay berthing facility at one of the UK’s largest privately owned timber wharves, handling over 400,000m³ of timber annually. 🔹 Project Overview The original 1960s quay infrastructure was no longer sufficient to accommodate increasing cargo volumes. To support expansion, our team provided a structurally sound sheet piling extension to the quay, requiring the removal of the existing timber bulkhead and the installation of 34 steel tubular piles. 🔹 Innovative Sheet Piling Solution Working in partnership with Byland Engineering Ltd and CR Reynolds, our in-house design team developed a highly efficient and practical solution: ✔ 34 tubular piles (20m in length, 1220mm diameter, 20mm thick) were installed with 100mm gaps between them for drainage, maintaining full structural integrity. ✔ A GRLWeap pile drivability analysis was conducted to determine the correct vibratory hammer size, ensuring effective installation. ✔ The 160-tonne crawler crane and custom-designed piling gates provided precision piling, overcoming the challenges of working with the existing timber bulkhead. ✔ The installed piles were tied back to a sheet pile dead man anchor using 85mm-diameter, 20m-long tie bars for maximum stability. 🔹 Seamless Execution & Minimal Disruption To maintain safety and efficiency, we worked in two well-coordinated phases: 📍 Phase 1 (April 2024): Installation of tubular piles alongside the operational dock. 📍 Phase 2 (May 2024): Final works completed after CR Reynolds removed the timber bulkhead. Throughout the project, our team ensured minimal disruption to dock operations, coordinating closely with New Holland Dock Ltd to keep vessel movements uninterrupted. 🔹 The Value of Early Contractor Involvement This project highlights the benefits of early contractor involvement (ECI). By collaborating with CR Reynolds and Byland Engineering during the tender process, we optimized the design, improved cost efficiency, and ensured smooth project execution, all while meeting strict safety and budgetary requirements. 📞 Need a Marine or Quay Wall Solution?
