When Napoleon III took power in 1848, Paris was unbearable to live in. With in a few decades, the number of Parisians exploded. Its unsanitary buildings and its narrow and dirty streets favoured the spread of diseases, such as cholera. The city being more and more industrial and industrious, the traffic was far from fluid. For the future emperor, Paris was a true challenge. But Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte had a clear idea of wha the wanted. After a few decades of exile in London, a city that was a role model at the time, he had time to immerse himself in the city’s progress with urban development. Transforming Paris and inscribing it in this new century, this will be one of the main ambitions of his regime: this demanded several decades of works led by prefect Haussmann, thousands of workers, hundreds of architects, landscapers and engineers. Their names were Belgrand, Alphand, or Baltard, andt ogether, they thoroughly transformed the capital city. This is in this Paris imagined by Napoleon III and created by Haussmann that we still live today, which proves how brilliant they were. But how was this transformation made possible? With which criteria? What were the great technical challenges that Haussmann and his men had to rise up to? This documentary will deal with this metamorphosis, beginning with the most obvious changes: the almost complete reshaping of Parisian streets, engendering the construction of new buildings: town halls, open and covered markets, churches like the one of Saint-Augustin, theatres, and many others. There are the transformations that we know and the ones that we cannot see: the tapping thanks to aqueduct of the Vanne waters for example There are also the transformations that Parisian zs can enjoy without knowing of all the work that was needed, for which their makers showed a lot of ingenuity: the numerous parks and gardens. With the help of archives, 3D animations, interviews with experts, and reconstitutions, this 54 minutes film will show to what extent Napoleon III’s transformation of Paris was necessary and colossal #FullFreeMovies #ScienceTechTv #Paris #Haussmann #NapoleonIII #Architecture #CityPlanning Welcome to Science Tech TV!
