In this Science Café, learn about the facial reanimation journey to restored health, form and function, and patient dignity. Facial paralysis is a debilitating condition where damaged facial nerves and muscles cause multiple impacts to the face beyond cosmetic details. The result of a range of conditions, including Bell's palsy, birth defects, surgeries, trauma, or strokes, this damage can often be improved upon or reversed with early, targeted, and multidisciplinary intervention. Shai M. Rozen, M.D., Professor of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern and Director of the Facial Reanimation Program, will also share about the research behind facial surgery and facial reanimation advancements. Dr. Rozen and colleagues from Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery co-created a specialty group to treat patients with facial paralysis, and their work is considered one of the leading and busiest treatment programs in the U.S. and beyond.
