Throwback to 2022 – the year we completed our second engineered log jam on hiłsyaqƛis (Tranquil), within the territory of ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) Nation’s hahuułi (territory). Large log jams play a key role in many river processes that create and maintain fish habitats. In this video, we explore the relationship between log jams and the formation of deep holding pools. By partially blocking the channel with wood, flows are forced to bend, compress, and accelerate around the log jam, digging (scouring) the streambed, maintaining pool depth even as sediment moves in from upstream sources. When adult salmon return to spawn, they also rely on deep holding pools to rest as they journey upstream. What makes this especially remarkable is that 2022 brought an intense drought, causing the hiłsyaqƛis River to dry up just above this structure. This holding pool became the only available sanctuary for migrating salmon—until the rains finally arrived in late October. That year, chum, coho, and chinook salmon all gathered in this vital pool to survive the drought. Since then, we’ve added 11 more engineered log jams to further restore healthy river processes, alongside landslide stabilization and forest restoration efforts. In industrially logged watersheds, the scale of restoration must match the damage done—and that’s exactly what we’re working towards.
