Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents: A review of “Onmyoji”, a Japanese fantasy drama from 2001 that stars Mansei Nomura, Hideaki Ito, Hiroyuki Sanada and Kyoko Koizumi. It was directed by Yojiro Takita, who also directed “Departures” – which won the Academy Award for “Best Foreign Language Film” back in the late 2000s. The Heian period (9th-12th centuries A.D.) was a time when human beings and various supernatural beings still co-existed with each other, the latter occasionally causing trouble to humans. Onmyoji, the practitioners of the art of onmyōdō, were held to be able to control and subdue these malevolent entities and other paranormal phenomena, and were thus held in high regard, being employed by the imperial court. Nobleman Hiromasa meets court onmyōji Abe no Seimei, a mysterious man about whom many rumors have been told. On a dare, Seimei demonstrates his exceptional skills in onmyōdō by killing a butterfly without touching it. Seimei later joins Hiromasa to investigate some odd phenomena in the area, which eventually lead them to a villain who is using dark magic. This is a very cool fantasy flick that is worth seeking out! Check out my Japanese movie review playlist: • Japanese Movie Reviews
