The Acts of the Apostles (Acts) is the only Church history in Scripture. It shows us of how the Ekklesia of Jesus began with the New Covenant, and how the first disciples obeyed Jesus after His death, resurrection, and ascension. Shows correct obedience. In the four Gospels, we see what Jesus taught and commanded His disciples and how He trained them, even sending them out in pairs at one point, to practice on their own (Luke 10). In Acts, we see how those commands were actually practiced by the early disciples, especially regarding salvation and discipleship, exactly as Jesus trained them to do. What they did in Acts is exactly what we should be doing today to obey Jesus correctly. This is why the Acts serves as the clearest model for the practice of salvation and discipleship for the Ekklesia today. In many ways, it is one of the most overlooked books of the Bible, and many believers miss the benefit they should gain from reading it carefully. People read it and do Bible studies on Acts, but dont know what they should be looking for. As we read through it, we should follow the early disciples of Jesus, watching carefully, to learn from them because they had the uncorrupted truth; Jesus Himself instructed them. We should carefully observe what they did, what they taught, and how they understood the mission of Jesus, so we can learn the truth from them and return to it. We should be seeking answers to questions like these: What did they do in obedience to Jesus? Did they go preaching, baptising and making disciples, or did they come to a special building weekly to sit? What message did they preach? Did they preach different interesting topics or only the gospel? Did they have hierarchy? Did they have anyone in a role of Priest that always brought the message, conducted weddings, funerals, christenings, etc? What did they do to minister salvation? Did anyone say a prayer for salvation? How quickly were people baptized after believing? How did they make disciples? Did they preach prosperity and a good life now? Did they put up buildings as places of worship? Did they build organisations or groups of any sort? Did they have easy lives or were they hated and persecuted for their message as Jesus promised? Was following Jesus socially advantageous or costly? Were they persecuted as Jesus promised? Did they pay Tithe or teach disciples to pay Tithe? And many such questions. By asking these questions while reading Acts, we allow Scripture to correct our assumptions. Because the first disciples learned directly from Jesus, their history provides the most reliable pattern for understanding what it truly means to follow Christ. We will be walking through the book chapter by chapter, following the first disciples and learning what Jesus instructed them to do. As we read, I’ll be pointing out important details in Scripture that are often overlooked, looking at them simply as an ordinary disciple of Jesus, not influenced by any institutional doctrine.
