Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) is a technology that optimizes engine performance and fuel efficiency by adjusting the duration of valve opening and closing based on driving conditions. Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) is a groundbreaking engine technology developed by Hyundai Motor Group. It is designed to optimize engine performance and fuel efficiency while being eco-friendly. The technology works by controlling the timing of valve opening and closing according to driving conditions, which can increase performance by 4%, improve fuel efficiency by 5%, and reduce emissions by 12%. CVVD technology is different from traditional variable valve control technologies that manage the timing of valve opening and closing or the depth of the valve's opening. CVVD takes it a step further by adjusting how long a valve is open, which can be beneficial for low loads and constant speeds, reducing resistance and improving fuel economy, or for high loads, enhancing torque and improving acceleration. The first engine to feature CVVD technology is the Smart stream G1.6 T-GDi, a V4 gasoline turbo unit with 134kW and 265Nm of torque. This engine is set to debut in the Hyundai Sonata Turbo and will be the first in a series of new Hyundai and Kia vehicles featuring the technology. The introduction of CVVD technology marks a significant advancement in powertrain technology, aiming to bring forth paradigm shifts and ensure the sustainability of Hyundai Motor Group's business model.
