Over many years you have learned about how to answer comprehension questions but still, it's difficult for many of you to answer comprehension questions correctly don’t worry in this video I m am going to break some mystery out for answering questions about the unseen passage with a simple step by step process Let's get into the video what is a comprehension section? A comprehension section might be a novel or short story, or information, etc That you haven’t seen before. You need to read the text and then answer for a series of question that is given to you Some questions might be multiple-choice some will be written it may vary based upon the passage the main purpose of designing a question for an unseen passage is to confuse you and to evaluate how well you are reading and understanding the given information or idea that is given in the text and they also assess how well you can turn your findings into responses and arguments Reading comprehension is like having a conversation with someone. If you do not understand what the other person is saying, you will have no idea what they are talking about and have nothing to say in return. because you didn't understand anything then what is the point of having a conversation like that The same concept is applicable for comprehension also So, in order to understand what you're reading, you have to follow 3 simple steps. Reading comprehension involves three levels of understanding: If the passage is given you have to understand the passage in 3 different aspect literal meaning, inferential meaning, and evaluative meaning. why I have to know this let us learn this one by one Literal Meaning [ direct question] The literal meaning is simply understanding what the text says. It's like a basic level of understanding the passage It is what actually happens in the story or text with a simple outline This is a very important level of understanding because it provides the foundation for more advanced comprehension. Without understanding the elementary part on this level, you could not go any further. for example if you are going to build the house the primary thing is you have to put a strong foundation Like that understanding, the primary idea of the text is very important example like The main idea facts that's given in the text The sequence of events Characters in the story these are all the primary thing that we need to know first about the passage then only we can move on to the next level Inferential Meaning [ indirect question ] Inferential meaning involves determining what the text means. You start with the stated information. that you already read but here the information is not given in a detailed way to determine the deeper meaning here most of the answers will be given in an indirect way we have to analyze and understand a little deeper Determining inferential meaning requires you to think about the text and draw a conclusion. Here you should understand a little deeper about the text so that only you can able to answer for indirect questions for example after understanding the literal meaning of the text which means foundation Inferential Meaning is like building the first floor on top of that uns=derstanidng the Cause and effect Generalizations Future predictions An unstated main idea Evaluative Meaning [ opinion] Evaluative meaning is what the text is telling us about the world outside the story or text. Readers must analyze what they have read. Then, they must form an opinion based on the given information. then only you can answer for the general question based upon the passage for example Literal Meaning is the foundation level 1 Inferential Meaning is like first-floor level 2 now top floor is Evaluative Meaning which means you can give your own answer or opinion based upon the understanding of the text level 3 hope you have understood how to read a comprehensive passage now we came to an important section How to answer comprehension questions – Step-by-step To teach you how to answer comprehension questions, we will first walk you through the process and then we’ll work through an example with you. Step 1: Read the text 1. Understand the meaning of the text as a whole, and Find the information the questions are asking for. while you read the text for the first time try to understand what is given in the text clearly after reading for the first time now try to answer the question that you can answer confidently but spending a lot of time on the question which you don't know is a waste of time just skip and move on to the next question for example if you have answered for 5 questions out of 10 no problem just finish the 5 questions that you know well now before reading the passage for the second time #comprehension #EnglishthroughTamil
