Current research indicates that a healthy body begins with a healthy mouth. Yup, it's a known fact now, through scientific journals, that a healthy mouth, one that's free of disease, can actually prolong your life span and give you more fulfillment during your life, free from some systemic illnesses. When I say a healthy mouth, I mean everything from bad bites, to missing teeth, to bad breath, to gum disease, to clenching and grinding. All of these things go into the masticatory system and they, in fact, are connected to our bodies. The big discoveries recently is something called the oral-systemic connection. That is the connection between the health of our gums, the health of our teeth, to that directly of our heart, our organs, all of our systemic blood work, etc. Let me give you some statistics that back that up. The surgeon general reports that almost 80% of the United States population has some form of gingivitis or gum disease. That gum disease or infection can lead to increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and even some types of cancers, and infertility. As a matter of fact, if you're a diabetic and you have a form of gum disease, there's a 400%-700% increase of premature death associated with that relationship. Women with gum disease who are pregnant only have a one in seven chance of delivering a healthy weight baby. One Harvard study indicated that gum disease increased the risk of pancreatic and kidney cancer by 62%. Eliminating gum disease or periodontal disease in your life will add 6.5 years to your lifespan. And lastly, if you have gum disease you are twice as likely to die from a heart attack as someone who has none, and three times as likely to die from a stroke as someone who has none. Thus, dentistry is at the forefront. I've said it before, if you don't have a healthy mouth, it's almost impossible to have a healthy body.
