Ambient music is an experiment in creating a mood

Sometimes, magic happens when you’re not even trying. That’s what happened while in my ambient music practice space: I was messing around on my synth, just playing around with sounds on my astrolabe 37, when I landed on a sound that instantly pulled me back to Richard Wright’s iconic Hammond organ on Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them.” You know that feeling—that slow, aching wash of chords and space that makes everything feel a little softer? That’s the vibe I fell in love with all over again. This piece wasn’t planned. It just sort of grew out of the mood that sound created. I wasn’t aiming to copy “Us and Them” or even write something in the same style, really—I just wanted to follow that feeling, to see where it would lead if I let it. The result is something spontaneous and honest, all built around that one Hammond-like tone.
