Happy New Year everyone! For this video we're exploring an architectural style I've always had a bit of a soft spot for: Postmodernism. It emerged in the early 1980s as a reaction to modernism, whose clean lines and rectilinear forms raised concerns that cities were losing their character and uniqueness. In contrast, post-modernism re-introduced decoration and ornmantation to buildings, with architects taking inspiration from a range of different styles. It's a style which has created some of London's most distinct landmarks: like 1 Poultry, the SIS Building, China Wharf, and The Circle - all of which we explore in this video. But post-modern architects also used the style to create modern buildings which responded to historical contexts. In this way it created buildings which you may have never even noticed before, because they blend in so well. Each of the buildings featured here could probably fill a whole video so let me know in the comments which of these buildings you want a bit more detail on and I’ll look into it! I'd like to thank Leesham and Andrew Wadsworth for featuring in the video, and my pal Lima Charlie who has been giving me a lot of help with my videos recently. 00:00 - Intro 00:36 - No1 Poultry 01:12 - More about Post-modern architecture 01:32 - The Circle, Southwark 02:56 - China Wharf 05:38 - Why modernism created post-modernism 07:53 - Using Post-modernism to blend modern buildings into historic contexts (Sainsbury Wing, National Gallery, Royal Opera House Arcade, Richmond House) 08:52 - Swedish Quay and domestic post-modernism 09:34 - Charing Cross station 10:48 - Westbourne Park Public Convenience 11:35 - SIS Building (Mi6) 12:18 -135 Bishopsgate For more information about the UK Post-modern movement, Historic England have an excellent video below: • Post-Modern Architecture: More is More Music attribution: (Soundstripe) OSA567OL1PRCCNA1, ACUZP1R2MMJGFGVQ, BIINKYE8R3IBZBQM, KZPYSMRF4TLQSABE, GWUMM4TOEIGVA1CR, JRFGD0X8NGKJGBQG, 5ID0DJIWE26Y9EZT, GDKYYEJBM9ESBNTL, DQUNUJASMNPKE3Q1, OYKYLNV4VNOQUF9Y, GIHZN75TW30CKQ1V, DZO2EACON6IXOAVB, N2LV81BEAHXGEOE5
