We all love to receive new things in the post and in this episode we’ll be looking at my latest addition to the rig. Ascher Racing’s F28 SC V2. This wireless edition of the wheel has two rotaries courtesy of 7-way multi-function joysticks and whilst the limitations of Simucube’s wireless protocol cuts down on the function of the wheel let’s see if it could still be a good option for racers looking for a formula rim, especially those of us racing in VR. Testing The 285mm grip to grip distance is a little less cramped than the 270mm of the Fanatec Formula V2 and for me personally that is a good compromise from the larger GT Pro that I also use. The rubberised grips feel of a decent size and allow me to comfortably use the wheel for long sessions. They aren’t quite as comfortable as my OMP rim but offer more grip with gloves and the option of using the wheel without gloves if I ever feel the need. The buttons are stiff but responsive. I can’t imagine accidentally activating these. The paddle shifters feel very nice. Closer in resistance to the Advanced Paddle module than the very light GT Pro shifters. For me this weight is great for stopping accidental shifts and providing additional magnets to reduce that activation force is a great move for more drivers to be able to get the shifters in that sweet spot. Using the multi-function joysticks as rotaries is a compromise and it’d have been nice to have a separate rotary switch but given the limitations of Simucube’s wireless system there was little room left for that on this wheel. In VR I find the buttons easy to find and the guards around some of them help you to locate where you are on the wheel through feeling alone. I’m not going to pretend that the joysticks are a fantastic choice, especially when in gloves but they work reasonably well. Final Thoughts The Ascher Racing F28-SC V2 is a good wheel. The rubber grips are a pleasure to use and I like the understated look of the unit. The button count is reasonable considering the limitations of the device and if the battery lasts the 2-3 years stated then you’ll probably almost forget you have a wireless wheel other than having to slide that switch on and off between use. The buttons feel very responsive and the gear paddles are perhaps the best I’ve used on a wheel so far. The wheel is good for VR use thanks to the joysticks present but I feel the lack of dedicated rotaries force you down the fiddly route of using those same joysticks for too many complex operations. A compromised wheel then down to the Simucube wireless system which is no fault of Ascher Racing. If you absolutely need a wireless wheel then it is good but limited and there are perhaps better feature rich bluetooth options available on the market. If wireless is completely optional for you then the rich array of USB wheels might be better to seek out. 00:00 - Introduction 00:55 - Unboxing 02:32 - Installation 03:27 - Wireless Pairing 04:44 - Testing 06:59 - Final Thoughts #simracing #racingwheel #simucube
