EDIT (2023): I apologize if anyone thinks this knockoff's name is an EXACT translation. I didn't realise it wasn't an exact one until I suddenly thought about it in June. About the name's translation: While we can refer to this toy’s name as “Chabi Elf”, a more exact translation would probably be 'Qiabi Elf', since '恰比' is written as 'Qiàbǐ' in Pinyin, and 'Qiabi' is a made-up word that wouldn’t exist in something like a dictionary. Despite the Pinyin for the character, there seem to be times where ‘cha’ (sounding like ‘cha’ in chart) has been translated to ‘恰’ because it sounds like the character. The last part of the toy’s name, ‘精灵’ can be translated to ‘Elf’ and has been translated this way many times by bootleggers. Even though it can be translated this way, this word doesn’t have a proper English translation. It has been used to refer to things like fairies, monsters, and other supernatural creatures. The term has also been used to refer to things like Smurfs or Pokemon. A while back, I thought that Chabi Elf was the direct translation of this toy’s name from Chinese, but much later on realised this isn't the case, since I now help with translating Chinese names to English from patents. I apologise for confusing anyone into thinking this was a direct translation. I think people would be less likely to mispronounce the toy’s name if I stick with “Chabi Elf” though, which is why I’d prefer it. Other than Pinyin being inconvenient to type, I’m honestly not sure why it’s usually typed without accents by things like news or wiki articles, since there can be confusion on how to pronounce something. Names are also translated without accents. I’m not sure why they’re called “Chuby Elves”, unless “Chuby” should have been “Chabi” and was a mistranslation, they wanted the toy’s name to look similar to “Furby”, or they know “Chabi” sounds like “Chubby” and made a spelling error or assumed “Chuby” and “Chabi” can be pronounced the same way.
