We follow two Native artists on their journey in the making of a mural on the Lincoln Park Resource Center/Hostel building in Duluth, Minn. Fond du Lac descendant Moira Villiard and Red Cliff Band member Michelle Waabanangagokwe Defoe are leading artists on this now completed project, and community members even helped paint it. The design was created by Villiard who has provided us with the written concept: The mural aims to bring color and life to a community resource center in Duluth's Lincoln Park neighborhood, utilizing Anishinaabe symbolism to provide insight into some of the city's Indigenous history. The lower portion of the mural will utilize designs submitted to Villiard by youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The dragonflies are a symbol of resilience and transformation and serve as a relevant reminder of our need today to grow and transform our lives in ways that allow us to live fully. Through cultural imagery including a hand holding asemaa (tobacco) and references to wild rice, the mural also serves as a reminder that even in uncertain times, we shouldn't forget the stories of the land we reside on and the people who were the first stewards of Turtle Island.
