Due to Shrovetide Football being cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19 restrictions, I decided to spend some time writing and recording a song about the game. I've created this music video in an attempt to capture the passion of Ashbournians with regard to this ancient game. I am not a professional musician or video editor, but I hope you enjoy it. For those unfamiliar with the tradition, in brief, Ashbourne Royal Shovetide Football is an ancient game that is played in the Derbyshire town of England, on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday every year. The two teams Up'ards and Down'ards (depending on which side of the Henmore Brook they were born) battle it out in this mass ball game in an effort to goal the ball. The ball is turned up in Ashbourne's Shawcroft car park, the goals (Millstones on the banks of the brook) are three miles apart. The Up'ards goal is in Sturston, the Down'ards goal is in Clifton. To goal a ball, a player has to stand in the brook and strike the ball against the millstone three times. There are some excellent videos on YouTube about Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football, that give more information and history of the glorious game.
