Rectangles slowly slide across the screen, and then the original photo fades in. This slow and gradual transition allows you to FINALLY see the blue/black! || HOW IT WORKS... Flip the dress colors: Notice that the entire background is white. This emphasizes the contrast with the dark stripes, and makes them look more black than gold. When the white rectangles slowly pull away from the dress, your eye subconsciously picks out the contrast between the border of the rectangles and the border of the dark stripes, and decides that the darker stripes must be black, not gold. The dress now appears black and white. This is NOT the original image. I have used greenscreen video-editing technology to remove the “blue” from the dress. The remainder of the video is the original image fading on top of the edited image, until you are left with only the original image. You should have retained the darker stripes as black, as long as you didn’t look away from the video, because that is what your eyes were taught to see from the beginning. But the “blue” that fades in is the “blue” from the original image—that you can now perceive. The reason this works is because the lighter stripes of the edited picture—those that you first perceived as white—are shown as a different white than the original picture. When the lighter stripes from the original photo fade in your brain now recognizes the contrast between the fake lighter stripes and the real lighter stripes and you can now perceive them as blue. For a detailed explanation of this principle, "Color Constancy", see the AsapSCIENCE video on this dress. Does this help you see both colors on the dress? Let me know in the comments below.
