Sabena used the 747s primarily on long-haul routes to the east coast of the USA, Asia and Africa. The airline was one of the first customers of the 747, the aircraft played an important role in Sabena's expansion and global reach in the 1970s and 1980s. The retirement of the 747 was part of a wider fleet modernisation programme aimed at reducing operating costs and improving profitability. The last commercial flight was made between October 29 and 30 on the Cincinnati-Brussels route. The fleet was replaced by newer, more fuel-efficient Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft. To prepare the aircraft for their next flight, ground operations usually include: cabin cleaning, catering, refuelling, cargo and baggage loading. Once all these activities are completed, the flight crew boards the aircraft and performs its pre-flight checks, aircraft inspection, flight plan, cockpit preparation, safety checks and passenger boarding and pushback, and communication with air traffic control.
