Biochar offers transformative potential for the coffee sector by improving soil health, enhancing climate resilience, and enabling durable carbon removal through the transformation of coffee byproducts such as husks and prunings. As coffee producers face increasing climate risks, degraded soils, and pressure to reduce emissions, biochar presents a practical and scalable solution that aligns with circular economy principles and supports productivity, sustainability, and profitability goals. In this webinar, panelists will explore three key questions: What are promising biochar applications and business models for coffee-producing communities and their trade partners? How can biochar contribute to climate-smart coffee production and carbon market access? And what are partnership models and enabling conditions for scaling biochar across diverse coffee landscapes? Together, we will examine how biochar can help build a more regenerative, resilient, and inclusive coffee sector. Opening remarks: Katherine Oglietti, International Trade Centre Moderator: Tom Mills, Stripe Climate Fellow Panelists: Luisa Marin, Executive Director, International Biochar Initiative Olivier Reinaud, Co-founder & Managing Director, NetZero Tiago Batista, Founder, Diamante Origens, Brazil Thomas Käslin, CEO & Co-Founder, Cotierra Pedro Manga, Prosperity & Impact Leader, Caravela Coffee This webinar is part of the 2025 (Re)Generating Value through Circular Economy in Coffee Global Webinar Series, organized by International Trade Centre (ITC), International Coffee Organization (ICO), and the Center for Circular Economy in Coffee (C4CEC).
