During the Medieval period, being stretched on the rack was an unimaginable ordeal, particularly for those accused of high treason or adultery. The mere sight or sound of the rack was enough to cause fainting, with its loud popping noises from broken bones and snapping cartilages. Prolonged stretching could lead to limbs being completely torn from the torso or permanent damage, leaving victims crippled for life. This brutal torture method was notoriously used to extract confessions, as accurately portrayed in the historical drama series, The Tudors. The tragic example of Mark Smeaton, a scapegoat in Queen Anne Boleyn's adultery case, illustrates this. As the only commoner among the accused, he was subjected to torture, while the nobles, including Anne's brother George, were spared this cruel fate. May Mark Smeaton and the others wrongfully accused rest in peace.
