Today, we commemorate: 13th Sunday of Luke, Our Holy Father Clement, Pope of Rome, Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria, Hermogenes, the Martyr Readings: Matins Gospel Reading: John 21:14-25 Epistle Reading: St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 6:11-18 Gospel Reading: Luke 18:18-27 The Gospel Reading from Luke 18:18-27 teaches us the dangers of wealth and the importance of spiritual riches. The passage recounts the story of the rich young ruler who asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, and the young man responds that he has done so. Jesus then tells him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, but the young man becomes sad and walks away because he has great wealth. The Greek Orthodox Church sees this parable as a reminder that true wealth is found in following Christ and not in material possessions. It emphasizes the need to detach from worldly wealth and focus on spiritual growth and generosity. The young man's sorrow is seen as a result of his inability to let go of his attachment to his wealth, which prevents him from fully embracing the Kingdom of God.
