The entire Warhammer 40K community was reeling when the identity of the Yellow King was revealed. But what if I told you, that the revelation Games Workshop gave us is a red herring? Despite the fact that the Eisenhorn Vs. Ravenor story arc is pure Warhammer 40K, it is unlike other works in the setting as it is first and foremost a spy story. A thriller not unlike a Jason Bourne story, or a Jack Reacher book. More Hunt for Red October than a cut and dry military sci-fi in a space fantasy setting like most Warhammer 40K stories. But this series, especially the recent Bequin books, are pushing the setting of Warhammer 40K forward unlike any other series, and they tie in to everything...especially the Siege of Terra and the Horus Heresy books, but also more recent lore like Avenging Son as well. So, take a deep dive into the lore that is behind the King in Yellow with me, Inquisitor Romanov, as I attempt to explain the unexplainable. For the King in Yellow of Warhammer 40K shares much in common with Robert W. Chambers' King in Yellow from his 19th century short stories collection...a cosmic horror that paved the way for H.P. Lovecraft, and has been more influential in horror and science fiction than just about anything else. It doesn't take a trained intelligence operative to understand that the revelation of the Yellow King at the end of the novel Penitent is unvetted, unverified, and uncorroborated intelligence. But the Warhammer 40K community is adamant that the reveal is absolute truth. I hate to break it to you guys, but this is a spy novel. And false leads and bad intel are all part of the package. That said, this video is objective enough that I entertain both arguments, that it is him...and it isn't him. And examine the ramifications of both.
