Various of children launching balloons STORYLINE: Thousands of Palestinians marked the second anniversary of their uprising against Israel with marches and rallies on Saturday. A crowd estimated at 25-thousand gathered in Gaza City to mark the anniversary of the 'intefadeh'. They were expecting to hear Yasser Arafat address them via a telephone hook-up from Ramallah where he has been besieged by the Israeli army for more than a week, but the call failed to materialise. Many of the people who came to Palestine Square for the start of the march were school children. They carried Palestinian flags and pictures of Yasser Arafat and chanted, "Yes for the intefadeh, no to occupation and surrender". Banners were held aloft with slogans reading, "President Arafat, all of us are behind you". In line with orders emanating from the Palestinian leadership, there were very few armed men visible at the march which was led by cars with loudspeakers playing patriotic songs. A handful of gunmen did appear and were asked to leave by march organisers, they claimed they were bodyguards for a local politician attending the event. Along the protest route many shops and businesses were closed as merchants observed a partial commercial strike. The Gaza march continued for just over one kilometre and ended at another city square. Hundreds of Israeli Arabs and left-wing activists marched in the Galilee town of Kfar Manda on Saturday afternoon to commemorate the thirteen Israeli Arabs killed during clashes that broke out with Israeli security forces in October 2000. Those clashes marked beginning of intifada. The participants marched from the entrance to the village toward the monument built in memory of the 13 killed. Some of the participants wore t-shirts with the slogan "United we stand after two years", and Palestinian flags were waved. Protesters shouted "Occupation is terror." The demonstrators called against the policies of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government, and called for support for jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti. One of the speakers who addressed the protest spoke about the Palestinian's exclusive right to the Al Aqsa mosque.
