Professor Gerard Kilroy is a member of the Literary Studies Department in the Institute of Modern Languages at the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Kraków, where he teaches literature, and a Senior Research Fellow at Campion Hall, Oxford. His research and publications have focused on the suppressed Catholic community in Elizabethan England, and on the subversive print and manuscript culture that developed. His teaching has been a passionate attempt to introduce students to some of the greatest English writers, from Shakespeare to Eliot, and to demonstrate what an exciting and liberating activity literary analysis of prose and poetry can be. Professor Krystyna Zabawa is the Head of the Literary Studies Department in the Institute of Modern Languages at the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Kraków. She teaches English literature, children’s literature and other subjects connected with literary and language education. Her fields of interests include the literature of the turn of the 19th century and early 20th century, especially poetry, female writers, children’s and YA literature. She is trying to convince students that reading literature may be also a real fun. Introduction These readings of poetry by Professor Krystyna Zabawa and Professor Gerard Kilroy were born during the dreary days of lockdown and were intended to enable students and all other interested people to hear the complex variety of English words and be consoled by the enchanting rhythms and transcendent vision of poetry read both in English and in Polish. In the dreadful assault both on truth and on all human values that has occurred this year since the barbarous invasion of Ukraine, poetry can speak truth to our hearts, remind us of all that is valuable in human life and enable us to “see it feelingly”.
