This marker indicates that the people downed in the game can be avoided or worked around. Usually parts of the game with respawning enemies, multiple walkways or optional areas. To put simply, anything marked without the '*' indicates that the person will be downed no matter what so that the level can continue, you don't down yourself or is scripted.
