Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne at The Bridge Folk Club, 22 September 2025 Tacoma’s Song (Jamaican trad / Cohen Braithwaite Kilcoyne) This is on Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne’s albums ‘Rakes And Misfits’ and ‘Play Up The Music.’ Cohen’s notes are: Walter Jekyll (1849-1929) is an important early figure in the field of Caribbean folklore and music. Born in Surrey, Jekyll started his career as a clergyman, but renounced his faith in the 1880s, and left England for Jamaica in 1894. Jekyll grew interested in the culture of his new home and began taking down songs and Anansi stories from people in his employment, culminating in his 1907 book Jamaican Song and Story. One of the stories included in this book, Tacoma and the Old-Witch Girl, features two verses sung as a dialogue between the two main characters; these verses are closely related to the English song The Keys of Canterbury. I have combined the two verses and melody from the Tacoma story with some common English verses to create a full song Cohen’s website is https://cohenbk.com and he is on Facebook at / cbraithwaitekilcoyne
