Rusa son of Argishti, or Rusa II, is quite the enigma. He can be credited with the rejuvenation and reorganization of the kingdom of Urartu, yet his legacy is nonexistent. All his efforts, it seems, were in vain. But who was Rusa II: a great despot, or a loon? What story has he to tell us, whatever became of Rusa? NOTES: The title is borrowed from Zimansky's fantastic article of the same name which can be found in the sources below. The path of Sargon's Eighth Campaign is an issue of major academic contention. The path depicted in the video is one that was proposed by Zimansky (1990). It appears he later amended this in favor of a path that wraps around the east of Lake Urmia as presented in Urartu: Transformation in the East, of which I became aware only after the production of the visuals. It is stated in the video that nothing is known about Rusa's character. Çilingiroğlu has proposed that the name Rusa chose for his massive citadel at Bastam, Rusai URU.TUR "Rusa's Small City", points to a humorous character. Make of this what you will.
