The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest lizard, endemic to Indonesia (Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Flores), reaching a length of 3 meters and weighing up to 160 kg. This carnivorous reptile has rough, scaly skin, a powerful tail, and a deadly venomous bite. Komodo dragons are endangered apex predators. Color & Skin: Adult Komodo dragons are dull (greyish-red/brown), while juveniles are brighter. Their skin is thick and covered in rough scales. Head & Mouth: It has a rounded snout, small eyes, and powerful jaws with around 60 sharp, serrated teeth. Senses: A long, forked, yellow tongue is used to detect odors (Jacobson's organ). Habitat & Behavior: Location: Native habitat is limited to Komodo National Park (Komodo, Rinca, and Padar Islands) and parts of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Environment: Prefers dry savannas, open forests, and coastal areas. Behavior: Nocturnal/diurnal animals that bask in the sun to regulate body temperature. They are also good swimmers.
