Is there a point when a partner, parent or carer should finally decide ‘enough is enough’, and should give up hope of their loved getting well from an eating disorder? We all know that eating disorders behave like the worst kind of life-sucking gremlin. They can attach themselves to those they choose, and are so very difficult to remove. I really struggle with the idea that it might be more appropriate for a family to accept that someone just might never fully get over their eating disorder – but the reality is, there are such cases. I’m not one for giving up lightly in the quest to give support and to keep channelling hope and positivity the way of someone on an eating disorder journey, but I can understand why a parent or partner might get to the point where the fight and the challenge is all too exhausting. To anyone out there who is supporting a loved one’s battle, my sentiment could not be clearer – you have to make sure you’re looking after yourself and that your efforts to help another are not at the detriment to your own wellbeing. Statistically, it’s a sad reality that a percentage of those with an eating disorder will continue to live with that illness until the end. If there’s one thing to take away from that, therefore, is that early intervention is critical and that we mustn’t let a single person fall into the severe and enduring category. Do reach out if we can help you, or the person you’re supporting. [email protected]
