Excursion by Alan Plater goes to the very heart of what it is to be a football supporter. Supporters who suffer for their cause. Supporting those big rich clubs is easy (with due respect to Alan Fender and Larry Murphy). You win more games than you lose, trophies come along at regular intervals and you play in la large well appointed stadium. How about the supporters of lower league clubs? They go to games knowing their team will probably lose, the great chasm of relegation is always looming, their ground is falling down only kept going by a large army of volunteers and financial ruin is always just around the corner; Salisbury City were wound up to pay debts of £200,000, probably what two premier league strikers earn in a week. A ‘good cup run’ means reaching the 3rd round of the FA Cup and the chance of a tie against one of the big clubs bringing the prospect of a giant-killing act. Supporters live for that unlikely win, that moment in the sun. Think of Hereford beating Newcastle, Colchester beating Leeds Utd, Bournemouth (when in the 3rd division) beating Manchester Utd and so many others. For the fans who were there the event will always live in their memory for those who didn’t go, because they had to go shopping or visit relatives, the regret will never leave them. Performed by John Scicluna, Larry Murphy, Judith Frank, Sarah George, Adam Baxter, Sarah Scowen, Alan Glynne-Jones, Jonathan Frank & John Baxter. This is quite long, thirty two minutes, so make yourself a cup of tea and sit back and enjoy the show. A much loved feature of membership of Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society is the monthly meeting, Curtain Call. At which a series of readings and songs, selected by either one individual or a partnership, are presented to those who come along. The evenings are always great fun and enjoyed by everyone who attends. For obvious reasons these meetings have been suspended for the present time and so we have come up with the idea of creating a virtual monthly meeting and we are asking you to contribute. Simply film yourself on a mobile phone or tablet device reading a favourite piece of poetry, prose or singing a song and send it to me either as an email attachment or through Wetransfer or Dropbox. I will then post the contributions to create a virtual Curtain Call meeting. My email address is [email protected].
