A short film to take you through the Kani weaving process in a slow, meditative pace, much like the craft itself. Guided by both hand and intuition, the master artisans of Kashmir still use traditional looms, heritage tools, detailed color charts and mathematical precision to create Kani shawls. Kani weaving began in Kashmir during 15th century, under the rule of Zain-ul-Abidin, who is credited with nurturing the region’s arts. Inspired by Persian tapestry techniques, this intricate craft soon became a royal favourite, with Kani shawls once adorning Mughal courts and European elites alike. From raw fibre to the finished product, making of a Kani shawl requires multiple processes along with the expertise of many artisans, who have honed their craft over years. It starts with a hand-drawn sketch, which is then converted into detailed color-coded instructions that the weavers follow, eventually taking form on the loom, row by row. Watch the video to discover the journey of the shawl. 🎥: Associated Media
