I recently had the opportunity to visit Prague for a couple of days. Although I was there for work, I knew I'd get a few hours to myself to do some exploring: this is the short film that I made as a result of my mooching about and thin-last-minute-wikipedia-level research. If you are interested in visiting Prague I hope you enjoy my snapshot tour - but perhaps more importantly - let this film challenge you to go further than tourist-to-do lists. Find ways of connecting with real people; what matters to actual locals instead of the default consumer-approved routes. Thanks to my host Ted, I was fortunate to be given the unexpected opportunity to film a choir rehearsal in Buštěhrad (a small non-touristy town about forty minutes outside of Prague). It was genuinely moving as an experience. As I listened to those voices I was reminded that all culture and history is a consequence of local human interaction - for good or ill - the things we love and express - the character we convey - this is the history unfolding right now among us. It takes a certain perspective and discipline to be able to look beyond the surface and taste true moments of humanity. (I am probably over-thinking this so I will stop there). /end 00:00 - Intro 00:44 - This is Ted my host 02:00 - Strahov Monastery 02:14 - The Velvet Revolution was on November 17th, 1989 02:46 - Hradcany Square 03:00 - Down the side of Prague Castle 03:20 - 1970s Trams 03:31 - Charles Bridge 04:01 - Astronomical Clock 04:28 - Traditional Beef Goulash with Dumplings and Pilsner 04:39 - Wenceslas Square 05:04 - Žižkov TV Tower (and David Černý’s amazing “Miminka” crawling babies installation) 06:53 - Crosstown to meet Ted for metro and bus travel to Buštěhrad 08:37 - “Adiemus” performed by Buštěhradský Pěvecký Sbor 12:10 - Thankyous and credits Thankyou to Ted and Carolyn Turnau for your hospitality, support and friendship.
