Chaos corruption among Space Marines almost always begins with some kind of weakness in the soul or fracture in the mind, and the Horus Heresy is the clearest demonstration of how this plays out on every scale, from an individual to a Primarch to an entire Legion. The first and most immediate form is exposure: the Warp itself is toxic to mortal minds, and even genetically engineered transhumans like Astartes cannot endure it indefinitely. Think of it like radiation: the longer one is exposed to daemons, warp storms, cursed artifacts, or tainted sorcery, the more inevitable the damage. Once corruption begins, its effects are manifold. Some Marines mutate physically with extra limbs, grotesque features, or warping of their gene-seed, because the Warp reshapes flesh as easily as thought. Others undergo subtler transformations, becoming increasingly addicted to the raw empowerment Chaos offers, like a drug that demands higher and higher doses. In other words, wielding Warp energy is like handling radioactive fuel: you can control it if you’re careful, but corruption is when you allow yourself to absorb it, reshape yourself with it, and let it dictate your will. It is almost impossible to truly shake off the influence of the Chaos Gods once they have taken root in a soul. Chaos is parasitic and symbiotic at the same time; the more a person leans on it, the more it becomes entangled with their essence. This is why repentance for Chaos Space Marines are virtually unheard of in Imperial history: once the Dark Gods have invested in you, they don’t let go willingly, and if you try to pull away, they punish you with mutation, madness, or destruction. But despite all this, there are still scant examples of a few Chaos space marines that have returned back, at least mentally or spiritually into the Emperor’s light or they have renounced chaos altogether for other reasons. However, there are Exceptions to this list, for example, the Soul drinkers were a chapter that were only physically twisted by chaos and actually followed Abraxes thinking he was an aspect of the emperor and therefore, they did not really turn on the emperor. Then there are the Many of the Fallen who are lost in the warp, hiding somewhere in the galaxy and all because they betrayed the Lion thinking that their primarch had betrayed the Emperor. These would not be considered as chaos marines, these are now called the Risen, with them following the risen Lion el Johnson. And lastly, There are renegade chapters that were accepted back into the Imperium service after penitence but these instances are also mainly also due to politics and the fog of war and they were never chaos marines that repented. Now, with those out of the way, lets take a look at the ones that are actually chaos space marines and traitors that worshipped the chaos gods and made a U turn and came back, showing that even in the abyss, hope still exists. Let’s get to it. --------------------------------------------- Credits: https://www.warhammer-community.com/ https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/ https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FAIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER * Copyright Disclaimer under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
