The convoy lined up in the Wadi Al Ramel area of the al-Hassakeh countryside in Northeast Syria to deploy in the province. The SDF announced the new agreement with the central government on Friday, aiming to stabilize a ceasefire that ended weeks of fighting. It lays out steps toward integrating the force into the army and police forces and integrating civilian institutions in SDF-controlled areas into the central government. Under the deal, government military forces will not enter Kurdish-majority areas, but small contingents of security forces reporting to the interior ministry will enter al-Hassakeh and Qamishli to secure state-affiliated institutions such as the civil registry, passport offices and the airport, and to restart work at those institutions. Syria’s new leaders have struggled since toppling former President Bashar Assad in December 2024 to assert their full authority over the country torn by nearly 14 years of civil war. An agreement was reached last March that would merge the Kurdish-led SDF with Damascus's new security forces, but it didn’t gain traction. The SDF lost most of its territory in northeast Syria to a government offensive after intense clashes erupted in the northern city of Aleppo on Jan. 6, following months of failed negotiations to implement an integration deal.
