(28 Nov 1994) STORY: PALESTINIANS LOCATION: VARIOUS DATE: 26 NOVEMBER 1994 DURATION: 1.42 Hamas marches en-masse; Lebanese camp still tense Thousands of HAMAS supporters gathered in Gaza on Saturday (26/11) eight days after clashes between the group and Palestinian police killed up to 16 people. The fundamentalist Islamic movement appeared to have marshalled up to 40,000 followers onto the streets, easily dwarfing the 10,000 who had turned out to support Arafat's PLO a few days earlier. Palestinian police were not in evidence at the Hamas rally, held as a memorial service for slain activist Imad Akel. PLO chairman Yasser Arafat promised he would take all measures to ensure the gathering was peaceful. In an effort to calm tensions between rival Palestinian factions, Arafat said he had asked members of the Palestinian Authority, which runs the self-rule areas, not to attend the rally. It was orginally scheduled for Friday but was postponed because of bad weather. Meanwhile, guerrillas opposed to Arafat on Saturday controlled positions they wrested back from pro-Arafat fighters at Lebanon's biggest refugee camp after a day of clashes in which eight people died. A cautious calm spread across the camp after the fighting with machine guns and anti-tank rockets died down after midnight. The fighting erupted early on Friday when more than 500 fighters from Arafat's Fatah guerrillas overran the sprawling Ain Al-Helweh Camp, 40 km (25 miles) south of Beirut. But the dissidents, PLO fighters who defected after Arafat reached the peace accord with Israel, counter-attacked after a brief cease-fire for midday prayers. holding Korans.
